Annual Kartik celebrations
|
|
October 26th - November 1st, 2007
Our kids are real show offs. But we mean that in the best possible sense. Throughout the year, the school stages many performances by the children whereby they entertain their class and school mates, teachers, visitors and, of course, themselves.
Over the years they have become more and more adept and skillful at putting up these shows. The teachers too, have been enthused by the success of their input for these small and large stage productions by the students.
The school has hired some of the best music and dance teachers in Vrindavan and the children have done their teachers and the school proud.
The annual Kartik Festival is a time for the children to showcase the best of themselves and their school to their many well wishers, sponsors and families. For seven evenings, the children put on dances, dramas and musical events to enter into a space of feeling confident and appreciated - the stage, from which they show all that they have learnt and been exposed to at their time in Sandipani Muni School.
Their dreams were enunciated and they were happy to be able to show the audience their own appreciations and joy at having a chance to perform in front of hundreds of people. The enjoyment all around is clearly visible in these images of the children and guests having lots of fun.

Kartik is a month long festival of great spiritual significance for those devoted to Krishna. The children offered the traditional ghee lamps that are lit every day for the entire month of Kartik and sang the Damodarastaka song celebrating this festival of Lights and thanksgiving.
We had many distinguished guests in our audience, amongst them senior police officials, members of the Indian Legislative Assembly, local administration officials, the assistant labor commissioner and a representative of the woman and child welfare ministry of India. The children and guests were also able to enjoy the privilege of watching seven nights of Krishna lila enacted bythe foremost Rasa Lila group in Vrindavan, the group of Fateh Krishna Swami.
The dedicated staff, teachers and administration of the school worked hard to make the program a success. But the children, as you can see, really stole the show.

Govardhan Puja
|
|
November 10th, 2007

The kids had great fun celebrating Govardhan Puja – a wonderful hill made of halava and laddhus was made, our toddlers dressed up as Krishna and the gopis gave a feeling of really been there...
After Krishna held up the hill while the gopis looked upon him, they all sat down and enjoyed the first prasadam taken from the hill.
Children danced and chanted, Jay Giri Govardhan, Jay Giri Govardhan!

Self Help scheme for Parents
|
|
A scheme begun five years ago to help parents of our children find a means of income was made possible by a donation from Mr. Ramesh Shah, UK. We gave twelve brand new rickshaws to fathers of SMS students with the understanding that they would repay the cost of the rickshaws in monthly installments. Rickshaws are the main means of transport in Vrindavan and therefore a sure source of income. The fathers are also hired by FFLV to pick up and drop students of the school for which they are given a monthly salary.Once the twelve rickshaws were paid for, FFLV gave another lot of twelve rickshaws to a different group of rickshaw pullers. In this way, we have been able to provide fifty two rickshaws over the years.
This is very much appreciated by these poor people as the only other alternative they have is to hire a rickshaw. That means their hard labor goes to the hiring company and very little is left for them to feed the family and survive. |

Raj Kumari, 12 years old: "...I am very happy at SMS."
|
|
I have a brother, Gyanesh, 8 years old, and a sister, Radha, 3 years old.
Three years ago my father died of a rare disease, he was sick for many months and he could not afford a hospital or treatment. After he left us, my sister was born. As my mother could not work she used to send me to wash plates and cups in a teashop, I used to get 5 rupees per day working there.
Some friend told us about SMS, I went to school with my family and we were immediately admitted to school, after sometime SMS also gave a job to our mother.
I am very happy at SMS, I wish to study and finish 12th grade, I do not want to get married earlier, and I have already told this to my mother.
I have many friends at SMS, Rampiyari is my best friend, we live close byand we confide and help each other.
Life has becomevery nice for us since we have joined the school, our sponsor is a very nice and kind person, he helps us a lot and we are very grateful to him and to Food for Life Vrindavan. |
